We don't buy 'em, we don't short 'em...

until the price is right and the time is right and ... even then there might be "acceptable losses".

(TKO) - one of the long candidates listed on the Members Site with a trigger price of $3.24 JUST YESTERDAY, today went up, marched through the "trigger price" in the first 10 minutes after market opened and then... then due to lack of volume, after vacillating at the +4.5% "profit zone" gradually retreated and closed with a loss of -2.8% off the "trigger price".

My trusted TREO 650 is been dead for few days and I was unable to place a stop loss order after (TKO) was bought at $3.26, but... BUT this is an exceptional example of how correctly calculated trade turns into a loss ( but NOT a financial disaster) due to unforeseen technical problem ( dead TREO it is). If not that, even after failed as of today breakout, if my usual -2% stop loss was placed, I'd have about 2.5% profit on a trade. "That" happens and when it does it proves time and again that by applying systematic work and following your trades religiously profit may constantly be made.
Tomorrow will be a better day - it always is.

As for today - visit Members Site for fresh trading ideas.

Clean up day

Today was a clean up day, a lot of ideas were OFFed.
2 positions had been taken off the list with biggest ( so far ) losses this year
(CVTX) -6%
(VVUS) -4%
As always the problem with biotech - you "smell" something, but it might be nothing, but sometimes you hit (TNOX) or likes - we tried. Still - biggest losses this year...

There was another MAJOR disappointment today
(BOW) from Jan 18th with T.P. of 22.89 - gapped up (we never had a chance, of course except for those who was already in - I was not for one :( and closed 24% up

Second disappointment - (IRTB) - gapped up in pre-market 7% and it was all down the hill from there - this is when it worth to repeat a rule - only fill on the way in the direction of your trade, not opposite!

On a personal note - my long time favorite ( reason? chart ) SYGR was bought by Carlyle today - up 28% ( I had longer term position in my wife's IRA account)

Market is shaky - hold on to your profits ( I use the rule - "keep at least 2/3 of profits no questions asked") - but someone might have a better rule, bottom line - KEEP YOUR PROFITS!

Few new trading ideas added to Members Site - you know where the key is!

(IRBT), (BOW), (SPAR), (GIGA),(TWW)

(IRBT) profiled on the night of 24-Jan-2007 did not make us wait for too long, beside, Friday's action was quite obvious. Premarket action pushed the bid up to 19.53 (last trade 19.26 ) - what is slightly too high, $19 +/- 20c might be OK

"iRobot Awarded $16.58 Million for First Major Deployment of Explosive-Detection Robots"

(BOW) from Jan 18th is running away as well - no chasing
"Abitibi, Bowater Agree to Combine"

(SPAR) from Jan 24th poping up about 10%, no news as I can see as of yet.

What we have as of right now - 3 run away trades and we never had a chance to fill. What a waste...
It will be interesting to see if it is possible to fill orders close to trigger prices during regular hours, if not - oh well

(GIGA) from Jan 24th collapsed pre-market -28% - that is an upside of trigger trading - we don't care since it has never exceeded $3.07 trigger price

(TWW) which we have at trigger price of $7.33 (7.37 limit) just poped +7%

Look for yourselves - don't blame me...NO CHILDREN IN THE ROOM, PLEASE!

Call me stubborn, I'm still cautiously bullish
Below are some ideas which don't fit to confined criteria to be put on "current" list on PRIVATE MEMBERS SITE ( well, some of them),
but still look quite interesting.

(CRYP) - this is a "dual personality" play, better short than long.
It is short right here under $25.7 ( but not above!)
There is a slim ( but rewarding chance ) that it might break year and a half long descending triangle and move to the upside, I'd be surprised to see that happen - there are some nasty divergences on MACD

Is this "THAT" time of the year again?

Is it time to short?
I don't know, possible, when I'm not certain - I am staying on a side lines, I don't try to catch a top ( Just like I don't like to be searching for bottom)

Bullish until proven otherwise...

Everyone in a bear camp has a "bad feeling" about market, everyone sees unjustified increase in stock prices, short interest increasing day by day...

Bulls, on another hand argue that economy is solid, we are heading for the "soft landing" and soon someone is going to say that we have "shortage of stocks"...

Who is right?
Market is right, it is still running full steam ahead ( Is it? We had 3 distribution days during last 3 weeks...)
Market is still running, we are at the top of earnings season, yes, right, WINTER EARNINGS SEASON - what famous saying I'm thinking about? "Sell in May and go away" In May?
How about March when FEDs are not going to cut rates and going to hint, again, that they will NOT do it for a while? Will market listen then?
Earnings are good? How much better earnings have to be from now on? Much better? How much is that - "much better"?

(EBAY) turned around? Great! How much money millions of shareholders made since March 2004? Zero? "NoTTing"? Let me rephrase - how many people are siting on losses since December 2004?

(ATI) at all time high? Great! Off 5 weeks long base? Pardon me - should I short it? Good question. Better yet - "should I short it now or in one week when mutual funds will finish unloading?" (of course, not one week - 'cause it'll be just a beginning of "unload" )

Somehow Bulls don't sound too convinced right now or is it just my imagination?

Someone, please, keep an eye on Wall Street Journal for me, let me know when they going to post an article with profound title "The Bear Is Dead" - that will be THE DAY to short and I think it is getting closer. Mid February? Any takers?

While we wait and listen to the market - visit Trading to Win MEMBERS SITE for stock ideas and detailed strategies ( for now mostly long - I don't like to spit against the wind )

Quick update

Only one success story today to report
(IOTN) posted on Members Site on January 17th
has reached its "trigger price" ( Posted on Members Site, of course )
and ringed in nice 8.39% off the trigger price ( give or take )

On a negative note - (CLUB) - which I impatiently took OFF the list just yesterday ( on Members Site, indeed) - "fired trigger" - and ( "woulda, shoulda, boulda" ) would have brought +3.84 off trigger price

Sunday evening update

Monday - watch (TXN) earnings, listen for CC - get a feeling on technology direction.

These are some new long and short ideas, I, myself, will be "slightly" hesitant to place any trades next week ( at least on Monday ) - this is a top of earnings season, moves will be muted and sometimes, deceiving.

Where and When...?

Here I go again, back to my favorite "deceit" theme, back to "Market will do what we expect it to do, only not WHEN we expect it to.."

As I was doing my regular "homework" in preparation for the next week, I spotted so many stocks that are at the final stages of forming classic chart patterns - mostly triangles, many of which (according to classic interpretations ) are quite bullish.

Such a great news for me, groomed by Investors Business Daily perpetual bullishness, but wait - something does not feel quite right, what is it? What is it???

I got it - most of "bullish" patterns I've recognized are very short in duration and IBD's classic statement says: "Short bases FAIL". That does not sound good - is it?

Well, it does not sound too bad as of right right now, there is still money to be made on a bullish side, those "short bases" do not fail tomorrow, they still might breakout on the upside - but after that LOOKOUT - if breakouts will fail to maintain their upward stance - bulls will run for the cover really fast.

Speaking of bearish chart patterns - as of right now a lot of those surprised bears, eagerly awaiting juicy profits, a lot of bearishly looking stocks resolved to the upside, the problem is - where is volume, where is continuation of an upside move?

Lets stay alert, lets be flexible, don't get caught asking naive question: "Why market did not do what I expected it to do?"

DavidDT

P.S. I will post some ideas on the Members Site later tonight and most likely will readjust a lot of stops, this time of the year I like to cut my losses even shorter than usual.

Trigger prices at work

(TMM) published on Members Site on the night of Jan 16th and bought on Jan 17th when trigger price of $2.82 was breached is up +7.09% as of today

(LOOP) published on Public and Members Site on the night of Jan 16th and bought on Jan 17th when trigger price of $16.47 was breached is up +4.74% as of today

Eight stocks from yesterday's list ( night of Jan 18th) have breached Trigger prices ( Trigger prices are been posted on Members Site ),
all eight closed in green off the trigger price, most notable movers are:

(EXFO) +8.45%
(BUF) +2.73%
(FALC) +2.68%
(CRY) +2.18%

Speaking of (EXFO) - it closed at $7.06, but I was able to buy it at just above trigger price ($6.51), limit order was filled at $6.54 and sell it in the very morning at $7.33 what makes about 12% profit for about 1 hour

Note: (HOLX) goes off the list on Monday due to earnings release.

Have a great weekend

(RACK) - another falling knife

Very tempting, very, but...
Don't you hate when someone says "but"?

I see a lot of distribution among other stocks lately, they move up, but looks like money are flowing out. Now ask yourself - if (RACK) for you is not a day trade - would you want to "bargain hunt" now? I would not. What an ugly day for (RACK) The only indication of what was coming was dipping CVAD indicator, otherwise - too much pump was going on for high multiple stocks.

Dumb luck or "TDAmeritrade Trade Triggers"

Vanity is not on the list of my sins, but once in a while anybody may get too excited by momentary success and post something similar to what I posted on January 12th

Now I have to pay the price and try to explain how that happened that on January 11th I did not own any of the stocks mentioned and on January 12th I become "a proud owner" of all 3 of most potent breakout stocks on my latest lists ( not to over stress YAHOO % GAINERS list's "membership" )

I have not found all of them in one day, they just happen to be traded at the same day ( which never happened to me before, gladly I came home for lunch and saw 3 buys triggered, so I closed BHIP) and (EVOL) - I just had to because I exceeded my margin).

As for "WHEN" I found them:
(BHIP) I put on watchlist on Decemebr 27 and set Trade Trigger "if bid >=1.8" then place limit buy at 1.83 - it fired on Jan 10th, I sold at the same day, set trigger again "if bid >= 2.3 place limit buy at 2.34 - I did not expect it to be executed that fast, namely January 12th.

Next, (EVOL) -found on Jan 11th ( night) set Trade Trigger "if bid>=1.39 then buy limit 1.42" - so not much profit here, but still.

Next - (JADE) - found on Jan 10th, set trigger "bid>=4.79, then buy limit 4.83" - this one due to a dumb luck did not fire on Jan 11th ( 4.79 was high of the day), but instead fired on 12th.

What are "Trade Triggers"?
TDAmeritrade offers Trade Triggers as an extra trading tools - I find it way too useful to ignore. Those are not orders, they are CONDITIONS upon which the real order will be placed.

It has multiple advantages.
First, it is not transmitted to the market ( Or so AMTD claims), so Market Makers cannot see them and manipulate market based on "order expectancy".

Second - since these are not orders - your money is not committed to a trade UNTIL Trade Trigger executes. ( E.g. - if you have $10K trading portfolio, you can place 5 orders for 2K each - if like me you dislike to trade on margin, but if you use Trade Triggers you might place UP TO 40 conditional orders, of course you better understand what you do - otherwise you might exceed your margin and dip into day trading power and if you miss it - you out of the game for 90 days - no questions asked!)

I don't have to set "alerts" and watch stocks all the day long, I just have to re-adjust trigger prices according to a price action over time and patiently wait 1 day or 2 months, as long as I still like charts, for order to be placed without tying up my trading capital. I do it all the time when I expect breakout or breakdown, normally 4 out of 5 trades lose or gain 2-3%, but 1 turns to be a really big mover.

Why DONATE?

When the best things in life are free?

Of course, you might choose not to do what you are not obligated to do...

BUT...

Have you ever thought that plants have to be watered?
Health has to be maintained?
Family taken care of?
Car fueled?
House repainted?
And on and on and on...

Now, imagine - you did not do what you did not really had to do...

That is what might happen to this website :)

On a serious note: Contributions are greatly appreciated, I do have expenses maintaining this site, monetary
(to name a few: Investors Business Daily Premium Stock Graphs, Stratfor, Reuters PowerScreener 3.0, Web Site designer fees since I am technically challenged :) - list goes on...) ,

and time wise
(I spent at least 2 - 3 hours EVERY day to maintain this site),

this site helps you to make the right investment decisions, prosper in a good and, most importantly - bad market, it saves you time I spent trying to find most rewarding ideas.

As an example of what kind of ideas you might find on this site, take a look at
Public Stocks Picks Performance
in 3 weeks time just by blindly following all ideas ( and methods) posted on this site someone would be able to realize over 34% return ( NOT ANNUALIZED!) based on "6 positions at a time portfolio"

For the same 3 weeks Members Site with detailed price points would have realized even larger return - that IS QUITE REMARKABLE no matter how you look at it.

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS

"Motley Fool" is NOT HERE!

Boring day today, 4 day trades, all long:
(MRVL) at last!
(RFMD) - boring
(HLX) - what was I smoking?
(KKD) - decided to hold overnight - something is cooking :)

While watching open positions, went through my old watch lists, found one compiled about a year ago from "Motley Fool" picks - what a shame!
I wonder how much would tthey make if they were getting "paid by performance".
Judge by yourselves, here is a MF list: AQNT, HLX, IART, IDIX, MOSY, PAAS, ROG, SGTL.
Big ... achievement, way to go Fools ( I love to hear "Foolish people" asking: "News is good, market is good, fundamentals are good - why stock performance SUCKS?" )

Oh well, back to more interesting things now...

Don't trade on tips

Not from guru coworkers, not from friendly financial advisor, not from strange people from tagboard :) ( Only on the tips from TradeGuild's Tagboard)

Quoted from tagboard on 16-DEC-2006 8PM:
"paul:
keep an eye on cnr ( Amex ) likely on the verge of a big oil discovery.

DavidDT:
Paul, welcome to tagboard. Paul, I hope (CNR) statement JUST a speculation and not an insider info (which I don't want to know). In either case - this site is NOT dedicated to rumors, but rather to unbiased "technical" stock selection and CNR chart does not look interesting. Beside, even if they WILL SAY that they found oil in "Georgia and the Republic of Kazakhstan" - I would stay as far away from this cos. as possible - I know how business is done in that part of the world"

Price of this tip ( best case scenario )
gain 10% or loss 30%

You decide...

Work in progress

Going over a lot of charts now, will post new list later on tonight.

(IRBT) 18.3 stop loss 17
(MRVL) 19.5 stop loss 18.7
(RGEN) 2.78 stop loss 2.6 <== 2.6 no questions asked!
(WEL) on breakout of 2.5
(SIMO) and (VOCS) deserve a look as breakout play, but they DID MOVE FURTHER UP than I like to see, might pullback first

As for shorts - I would start shorting ETFs now ( I still think we might see market move to the upside till mid-February )

Learn to lose

Very unpleasant, but totally unavoidable subject.
Everyone loses, some lose on 50% of the trades, some lose on 70%, sometimes the very best traders in the most powerful bull/bear market lose 30%, but EVERYONE LOSES on "some" trades, this comes with the territory, this is in the nature of the great market game.

The difference is - HOW TO LOSE, how to handle huge emotional impact of losses. Beside of "8%" rule and many other rules for losses, good trader has to develop "emotional resistance" to burning desire to feel the pain of loss way more personal than enjoying making money on the trade. Everything that matter at the end of the day, month, year is to be at a profit at the total portfolio level. It does not matter if you lost $1000 on each of 5 trades you made this week, what matter - you have to be able to concentrate on next, winning trade having potential to make $6000 and put you in profit of $1000 for a week.

If you let your losses to get under your skin, chances are - you are not going to be able to find that winning trade and as time goes by you will come to the only possible "end of story" - total loss of assets, "chips" and you'll be out of the game if not forever, than for a long time. Don't be addicted to trading, be professional ( even if you are "amateur", enjoy the game and enjoy the score ( making money ) more than thinking about losses. Don't become hostile as a result of losses, if you do - next step will be arrogance - and that is a deadly sin for trader, such trader destined to lose it all.

Just like life - in order to enjoy and appreciate life and success one has to fall and pull himself together - prize will be sweet!

There will be new post later tonight

I'll go over the last few weeks' charts, there is something I'm missing - I think I underestimated last week low volume effect on charts "quality". If market will not go up tomorrow ( and I mean - UP STRONGLY ) - I will close any ( IF ANY ) of positions opened based on last week ideas.

Evening update

potential longs: (RDCM) (VSTH) (CRNT) (MGIC)
potential shorts: (GAP) (ROK) (CHAP)<==high risk/high reward (CBEY)

Members' site is been updated with my "preferred trades"

"The dark side of desire"

In the spirit of up-keeping my "New Year resolution" this post kicks off "Trading rules explained" series.

This post is about one of the most important, but often overlooked rule, having huge philological impact on trader's course of actions and decision making process.

Never confuse "Making money for the sake of fulfilling material desires" with "Making money as having profit on a trade".

We do trade for achieving material independence, when we place the trade we need to think PROFIT, NOT "I need to make $50K to buy new car". Setting material goal as a trade objective is dangerous, it clouds our judgment, messing up initial trade setup and timing and interfere with "close position" decision. What if we are not going to make $50K on a trade or "withing a month"? Are we going to hold position forever if we only making $48K? Are we going to quadruple the size of position to achieve "$50K objective" sooner? Remember "counting turkeys" story? Are we going to trade even if market is bad and timing is wrong? I doubt that many of us will answer "yes" to any of these questions.

So here comes the rule:
Trade for profit - you'll decide how to spend it AFTER you'll make it.
